BIKE WEEK RACE REPORT from Stephen Edmondson

Well it all started off pretty good in South Carolina at race number one, the Sandlapper Enduro. I had a pretty good race and really no problems to mention. I got second for the day and then it was off to strategic packing to get everything all loaded up in Dean Staley’s camper. We did not wait around after we got everything all packed up and headed off early to sunny Florida.

It was me, Dean Staley, Chance Baker, Tim Henion, Todd, Tyler and Corey McDonald all packed into the Renegade for the drive. We arrived to the site where the first GNCC was being held early Monday morning around 6:30am. It was a day of working on the bikes and getting everything ready to go. I had a lot of work to do to my bike because I was running my practice bike. My race bike and all of my spare parts/gear were still making their way from the California National Enduro. On Tuesday it was time for race number two. I rode decent but it is just not my kind of race. I even ran out of gas on the last lap. I had to use my camel back to get gas out of someone else’s gas tank. Thank you to the person who took time from their race to help me! Needless to say I finished 21st in the pro class and now it was time to get focused on the Alligator Enduro that would be on Thursday.

We loaded up the camper and this time instead of putting the Jeep into the camper, Chance and I decided we would cruise it to where the Alligator was being held. We geared up in our stocking hats and coats but were still frozen when we arrived in Daytona Beach. After we thawed out and got a good nights sleep it was off to working on the bikes and changing tires again.

The race went ok, but I was just sore from the GNCC on Tuesday and it took me a little bit to get warmed up. I lost most of my time in the first section but after I got warmed up, I was good to go. In the end I finished third. Time to hit the road again and off to Georgia for the GNCC.

I was hoping to do better than I did in Florida but little did I know that my chain was going to come off. Of course it had to be the farthest point possible from the truck but after trying on the track to get my bike fixed with the help of some other nice people, I decided I needed to make the walk to get some tools. Dean and I grabbed a big bag of tools and off we went to retrieve my bike. The chain came off and somehow got wedged up in the motor which then caused my bike to just quit. Once we got my bike running I headed back to the truck because the race was over.

All in all, the week was a lot of fun even with a few mishaps.

This coming weekend I’m committed to racing a local VCHSS race. (www.vchss.org). I’m really looking forward to racing close to home.
